Overview

香源小食馆 Restoran Xian Yuan is a modest yet lively Chinese eatery nestled in the heart of Taman Sungai Petai Permai, Alor Gajah, Malacca. This spot serves a variety of traditional Chinese dishes with a Malaysian twist, making it a beloved destination for both locals and visitors craving authentic flavors in a casual setting.

The menu centers around familiar favorites like Kueh Teow Basah and Pork Curry Rice, both praised for their generous portions and comforting flavors. Signature dishes such as Sambal Petai Udang and Sambal Petai with Prawn & Squid stand out with their bold, spicy sambal that complements fresh seafood perfectly. Sizzling Taufu offers a slightly different take from the usual taucu style, although some diners have noted it could benefit from a little more sauce to enhance its richness. Lala Soup and Squid Fritters also deliver on freshness and texture, balancing the spice with lighter, savory notes.

The setting is reminiscent of a traditional Chinese kopitiam with simple outdoor seating, creating a warm and approachable atmosphere suited for families and friends looking for a relaxed dining experience. Service is friendly and efficient, with meals arriving remarkably fast—often within minutes of ordering—a feature that adds to the welcoming vibe here.

While the restaurant embraces its roots in Chinese cuisine, the diversity of patrons and the fusion elements in dishes reveal a wider appeal, reflecting Malacca’s multicultural gastronomic scene. Whether you seek a hearty lunch or a casual dinner, 香源小食馆 offers dishes that are flavorful, satisfying, and reasonably priced without compromising on quality.

Overall, this humble eatery thrives on delivering authentic Chinese comfort food with a local punch, making it well worth a stop on any culinary tour of Malacca.

[NON HALAL] This humble Chinese restaurant (ironically in Taman Sungai PETAI Permai, Alor Gajah serves authentic Chinese dishes with the star of the show - Sambal Udang or Sotong Petai. The sambal had the right "pedas" level with big, fresh prawns. The only weird part is the cucumber and bell peppers which were raw. The sizzling taufu was unique, not the usual taucu sauce. But, it needed more sauce. Eventually, the hot plate burnt some of the egg and taufu which was dry. The sotong fritters were magnificent, not dry or rubbery. Go for the salted egg option, I went for the fried version. AMBIANCE: Chinese kopitiam set up with outdoor seating. Staff provided great service, just that I had to call them a few times to get their attention. PRICING: Reasonable. RECOMMENDED TO TRY: Sambal udang or sotong petai, fried squid, sizzling taufu, fried pork, wan tan hor or the hokkien mee.

Prawn we're big in the petai sambal dishes, pork leg with gravy in claypot, vegetables and lala soup to complete our lunch in malacca. Also not so expensive for 3 of us.

Stumbled upon this restaurant while on the way back to KL. It was a pretty good find, I must say. They had variety of dishes and all were really delicious for me. Ordered the sweet and sour yam basket, radish egg, veg and tofu. I really enjoyed it. Good portions. However, the yam was not that great. Too soggy. Not to my liking but my friends didn't seem to mind it. Very friendly staff too. Definitely don't mind coming back here again.
